Use Google Base to promote activities and events

If you have a Web site, it’s worth the time to submit your content to Google Base. You can contribute all kinds of information to the Google Base database, including activities and events.

Why go through the trouble? Submitting your feed to Google Base means that you know your content is getting indexed and it also allows your results to be enhanced with additional information like the day of the event, pricing, location etc. It may be the difference in getting a click.

It’s all part of a new era in search, sometimes referred to as blended search. Search engines (not just Google, but Bing and others as well) are displaying content in search results instead of only pages. It gives the user a better experience because they have a good idea of what they’re getting when they click on the link.

Yahoo! has a similar database called SearchMonkey. Try them both out if you haven’t already.

How to display your lifestream in WordPress in 7 steps

If you’re unfamiliar with the term “lifestream,” it is an aggregate of your social media feeds. In other words, it is a collection of your Tweets, images, blog posts, boomarks, etc all in one stream. See an example on my new lifestream page.

If you have a WordPress blog, it’s extremely simple to add a lifestream page. Just follow these steps:

1. Login in to your WP admin page and click the “add new” link in the plugin bar.

2. In the search field, type “lifestream’ and hit enter

3. Install and activate the lifestream plugin by iBegin

4. On the very bottom of the left hand column, click on the lifestream tab

5. Add as many or as few feeds from your social media accounts

6. Create a new page and in the body section type [lifestream]

7. Publish the page and check your new URL to make sure everything is working

Questions? I’d be happy to answer any I can in the comments.

Fix duplicate content from session ID’s with canonical URL tag

A few weeks back, I received a Tweet from Matt Cutts that referenced a presentation on duplicate content (see slide show below). The slide show was presented by Greg Grothaus at SES San Jose.

What I found valuable was the content on slide 13, which touched on the use of the canonical URL tag to combat duplicate content issues that are associated with session id’s. Now, this is hardly news for those who follow SEO trends. However, up to this point, I have been somewhat skeptical of this new method and how effective it might be.

This presentation gives me confidence that this method is worthy of use and one that I should employ it when working with clients that have similar problems. Any thoughts?

How to get your images indexed by Google

Google Images logo

Google Images logo

Search engines have come a long way in the last few years. Blended search has come to fruition, which means we are no longer just searching for Web pages, but all kinds of content including images, blogs, videos, products, etc. Because blended search is so prominent, it’s important to make sure all of your content is indexed. This post will focus on how to get your images indexed by Google so that they will appear in Google Images and hopefully in regular searches as well.

The secret to getting your images indexed is simple – optimize them. I suggest the following:

  • Use an appropriate alt tag on all images
  • Give each image a title
  • Add image height and width in img tag
  • Name the file using a relevant keyword (dashes between words)

If you have some extra time on your hands, check out this blog post for additional image optimizations tips.

Another point that needs attention is making sure your images can be found by search spiders. Make sure to check your robots.txt file to see if you are preventing any spiders from crawling parts of your sites that have images you want in the index.

Google Webmaster Tools gives you the option to have your images crawled, but whether or not they are prominent in the results will depend on optimization. Also, be patient. It can take months before your images are indexed properly by Google, which is all the more reason to get this done as soon as you can so you can benefit from some additional traffic.

Twitter hashtags explained

During the Q&A portion of a webinar that I listened to today, one of the participants asked what the hash symbol (#) meant in regards to Tweets. I thought I would take some time today to briefly explain why hashtags are used on Twitter and when they might be appropriate.

Placing a hashtag in front of a term in a Tweet is a way of tagging that term, similar to how you might tag a blog post. Once the hashtag is in place, it becomes easier for others to follow this conversation as they search for Tweets that contain that hashtag.

Let’s look at an example. The webinar I referred to earlier was using this hashtag: #prwebinar. If someone was using Twitter and wanted to follow the flow of conversations about this webinar, they could search for this hashtag and find a stream of all Tweets that refer to it.

For a full list of Twitter hashtags, visit this Twitter hashtag directory.

I love that commercial!

One advertising theory that has always stuck with me is that if a campaign does not increase sales, it’s not good advertising. It’s a fundamental idea that everyone in advertising should follow. Unfortunately, much of advertising has strayed from this and taken the idea of entertainment in higher regard than selling the product (or service).

The overall goal of brand advertising is the same. It’s one thing to get a reaction from someone on how hilarious they think a commercial is or how much they love it, but it’s entirely different to get a response and drive sales at the same time.

Campaigns can be entertaining while increasing sales, but the latter has to be there at some point for it to be good advertising. A perfect example of a campaign that is highly entertaining (at least in my opinion) and shows results is the “Most Interesting Man in the World” campaign for Dos Equis. A recent article in Advertising Age explains its success in further detail.

I don’t always flaunt advertising campaigns on this blog, but when I do, I choose Dos Equis.

What is social media?

Here’s a slide show that explains social media and what you should know if you are planning a social media strategy for your company. I found this puppy on Mashable.

Yahoo and Microsoft combine search efforts

New search engine - BingBy now, you’re probably aware that Yahoo and Microsoft have finally come to a deal that combines their Internet search efforts in order to be more competitive with Google. What I would like to discuss is the impact this will have on search engine marketing, if any.

In the terms, Yahoo has agreed to have their search engine powered by Microsoft’s new search engine – Bing. By powering Yahoo’s search, Microsoft will increase their search volume and have access to valuable user search data. Yahoo will be able to drastically cut operating costs because they don’t have to invest in search engine technology and they will still receive 88% of ad revenue from searches on their site.

So what has changed from a SEO perspective? Not much. The Yahoo interface will look exactly the same as before, but the results will be produced from Bing’s algorithm. With that being said, you should see the same results in both Yahoo and Bing, once the partnership is in full swing.
